The Academy was founded in 1977 in order to improve the quality of care for patients requiring expertise in these two major surgical specialties by setting high standards for training, credentialing, peer review and ongoing surgical education.

You are invited to submit your original investigative work for presentation at the 34th Annual Scientific Meeting, May 5-8, 2010 at the Brown Palace Hotel & Spa in Denver, Colorado.

This year we look forward to presentations on evidence based medicine, practice management  and state of the art technology as it applies to our specialties. It is an honor to host our faculty - each renown in their subspecialty area, their expertise and experience.

Message from the Chair of the Scientific Organizing Committee

 JOIN US....This year The Academy is pleased to host three days of Neurosurgical and Orthopaedic Surgical Plenary Sessions grouped by surgical subspecialties. Each day you can also participate in hands-on workshops to complement the didactic lectures - all of which will be led by well respected international faculty. Each  will share their pearls of wisdom, expertise, and surgical techniques with participants.

One of the goals of this year's meeting is to showcase novel technologies and their applications while providing continuing medical and surgical skills education. This year you can also learn tips from medical ethics, practice management and medical-legal experts to enhance the viability and longevity of your surgical practice.

We look forward to sharing this experience with you one mile high - in gorgeous Denver, Colorado.

Designation Statement

The Academy (AANOS) designates this educational activity for a maximum of 24 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Our goal is to provide and present the most progressive educational programming and evidence based medicine. The Scientific Organizers have determined that the following areas in orthopaedic and neurological surgery are currently experiencing the greatest technical advances and invite abstract submissions in any of the following categories:

7.     Neurosurgical Trauma

8.     Orthopaedic Trauma

9.     Orthopaedic Pediatrics

10.  Fetal Surgery

11.  Vertebroplasty

12.  Microsurgical Treatment of Brachial Plexus Injuries

13.  Novel Applications in Neuro-endovascular Techniques

14.  Peripheral Nerve Grafting

15.  Open Reduction Fractures

16.  Technology as Applied to Global Exchange in Neurological Surgery & Orthopaedic Surgery

17.  Novel Applications in Neuro-endovascular Techniques

These topics have been derived from research and literature review, practice parameters, consensus reports and quality patient care data that includes chart audits, mortality/morbidity data, risk management data, and quality improvement data.

All submissions are welcome.  Abstracts accepted on additional topics will be presented as "Free Paper Presentations" and will be included in the final program. 
 

General Information and NEW GUIDELINES for Abstract Submissions:

 

1.  Abstracts are being selected in Orthopaedic and Neurological Surgery. Submitted papers should be original and address the latest clinical surgical applications with a primary focus on the topics as described above.  Only MD's and DO's may submit abstracts for oral or video presentation. Other healthcare providers are invited to submit abstracts for poster presentation consideration.

2.   The title of the abstract should clearly define the topic and be typed in capital letters.

3.   After the title, the presenting author should be listed followed by co-authors, followed by the name of the institution(s) where the research was completed, including the city, state and country.

4.   The body of the abstract should not exceed 250 words and must contain 4 separate paragraphs, one for each of the following:

Introduction - A brief statement regarding the purpose of the study and the current state of research in the field.

Methods - Briefly define the method(s) of study or experimental approach.

Results- Provide a summary of the study results, including sufficient details to support the conclusions.

Conclusions- Should be based upon the findings and relate to the stated purpose of the study and existing knowledge. Include implications for further research.

5.   Proprietary names of drugs and or instrumentation are not allowed, generic names should be used. See the brief explanation regarding "Conflict of Interest and Off-label Disclosure Policy Form" found online at the following site:

6.   When submitting the abstract be sure to include your contact information (name, mailing address, phone number, fax number, e-mail address). Remember to list the surgical specialty and topic that best defines your presentation's surgical specialty and the PROGRAM CATEGORY as previously listed.

7.   Presenting authors must complete and submit the AANOS "Conflict of Interest Disclosure and Off-Label Disclosure Policies Form" for each submitted abstract.  If research was supported by a pharmaceutical company you are required to indicate the company's role in analyzing the data or preparing the abstract. Abstract Submission and Program Registration

Expenses associated with the submission and preparation of an abstract are the responsibility of the presenter.

Submission of an abstract does not constitute registration for the conference. Presenting authors of accepted abstracts are expected to register for the meeting and pay the meeting registration fees.

Some medical devices discussed or demonstrated in AANOS educational activities may not have been cleared by the FDA or may have been cleared by the FDA for specific uses only. AANOS requires the Faculty for this Course to disclose unlabeled uses of products. It is the Faculty's responsibility to disclose when an unlabeled use of a commercial product, or an investigational use not yet approved for any purpose will be discussed during an education activity.

Faculty Disclosure

It is the policy of AANOS to abide by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education Standards for Commercial Support. Standard 2: "Disclosures Relevant to Potential Commercial Bias and Relevant Financial Relationships of Those with control over CME Content", requires all planners, including course directors, chairs, and faculty, involved in the development of CME content to disclose their relevant financial relationships prior to participating in the activity.
