Purpose
and Responsibilities of The American Board of Medical Accreditation
The
purpose and responsibility of ABMA is to meet the needs of specialty
boards with merit who have a special mission that may not have been
recognized by other established accrediting bodies. To assure ABMA
that standards and requirements are fulfilled it will be ABMA's purpose
to:
-
Ensure
that all candidates for the certifying examinations
are qualified by education ... including medical school (allopathic
medical school, osteopathic medical school and foreign medical schools),
internship and completed specialty training program.
-
Ensure
that the boards seeking ABMA accreditation establish and maintain
standards for the administration of examinations for certification.
-
Aid
the boards in establishing criteria and approving standards endorsed
by all boards for admission of candidates to the certifying examinations.
-
Evaluate
all boards fairly regarding their mission and purpose of existence
as a separate certifying specialty.
-
Avoid
exclusion on the basis of specialty board's applicant's educational
background, i.e.; medical school, osteopathic medical school, foreign
medical school, place of internship or training program, to meet
the requirements for certification.
-
Evaluate
candidates fairly on their qualifications in the specialty for which
they are applying for certification. They must be able to document
all educational background and training and/or sufficient experience
in said specialty to satisfy the requirements of ABMA.
-
Receive
and encourage applicants for ABMA membership by proposed new specialty
boards and act fairly and expediently on the applications.
-
Disseminate
to the public, upon request, the ABMA certification status of member
boards.
-
Coordinate
the exchange of information among ABMA member boards that may improve
quality and efficiency and enhance goals.
-
Provide
educational programs to professionals and the public to provide
information on what it means to be a specialty board and board certified
specialist with the ABMA accreditation.
-
It
is the purpose and responsibility of ABMA to enhance, not replace,
the other accrediting boards and add an extra dimension that they
may not be able to provide, traditionally or politically. ABMA agrees
with them in standards and principal.
-
Assist
in and encourage recertification of the specialty boards diplomats
-
Review
each ABMA member boards' certifying process on a regular basis
-
It
is the ethical responsibility of ABMA to educate the public on the
merits of ABMA's "stamp of approval" on medical specialty certifying
boards and their diplomats. This is to include the intemet, media
contacts, press and television advertising.
